The audition boom is not in Mumbai any more

Roles opened on Suyaara grew in every city we operate in this year. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that the four fastest-growing markets were Bhopal, Guwahati, Chandigarh and Kochi, and three of them grew at more than double the rate of Mumbai.

What is driving it

Streaming platforms stopped commissioning one show and dubbing it into seven languages, and started commissioning original shows in those languages instead. An original needs local faces, local accents and local crew, and it needs them where the story is set.

At the same time, the cost of shooting on location fell relative to building the same street on a Mumbai floor. A production that once approximated Bhopal in a studio now shoots in Bhopal, and casts a large part of it there.

Who is getting hired

Theatre performers, overwhelmingly. Regional theatre circuits have been training people for decades with almost no route into screen work, and productions arriving in a new city discover a deep bench of trained performers who have simply never been seen by a casting director.

The second group is people with a specific verifiable accent. A production shooting in Madurai wants Madurai Tamil, not Tamil. That distinction used to be impossible to search for, which meant it was usually ignored until someone noticed on set.

What it means if you are outside a metro

The old advice was to move to Mumbai and wait. For a meaningful share of the work now being commissioned, moving to Mumbai actively makes you a worse fit for the role, because the production wants people who sound like they are from where the story is set.

The practical version of this: tag your dialect, not just your language. Say where you actually grew up. List the regional theatre work you did not think counted. Those are the fields productions are filtering on, and most profiles leave them empty.
